Senate Minority Whip, Tony Nwoye, has defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), citing internal crises within his former party.

The lawmaker, who represents Anambra North, formally communicated his resignation, attributing his decision to ongoing divisions and multiple litigations at the Federal High Court that have undermined the party’s cohesion and stability.

During plenary in Abuja, Godswill Akpabio read Nwoye’s resignation letter and directed the Clerk of the Senate to update official records accordingly.

In his letter, Nwoye emphasized that the persistent legal battles and court judgments affecting the ADC had significantly disrupted its formation and overall functionality, making his continued membership untenable.

The Senate President subsequently wished the lawmaker well in his new political party.

According to Lazeera News, the defection follows a similar development during Tuesday’s plenary, where 18 lawmakers, including 17 House of Representatives members and one senator, also moved from ADC to NDC.

The situation is further compounded by the earlier exit of prominent opposition figures such as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, a development widely seen as weakening the opposition coalition across both chambers of the National Assembly.
