Gunmen suspected to be bandits launched a daring ambush on the convoy of the Zamfara State Governor’s Chief of Staff, Alhaji Mouktar Lugga, along the Funtua–Gusau highway, sparking fresh concerns over insecurity in the region.
The attack occurred near Kucheri village at about 6:16 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2026, as the top government aide was returning from an official engagement.
According to reports, the assailants emerged from both sides of the road and opened fire on the convoy, specifically targeting the vehicle conveying Lugga and his team. In the chaos, a bullet pierced the windshield, narrowly missing the driver, while another attacker reportedly attempted to shoot at close range but suffered a weapon malfunction.
Despite the intensity of the ambush, the driver skillfully maneuvered the vehicle out of danger, ensuring the safe escape of all occupants without injuries.
Finally, the incident once again underscores the persistent security challenges in Zamfara State, where banditry continues to threaten both civilians and high-profile government officials.
