A fresh political storm has erupted in Nigeria’s southwest after former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose released documents alleging Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde received ₦50 billion in federal funds for Ibadan explosion victims but disbursed only ₦4.5 billion. Makinde had challenged Fayose to provide proof, prompting the release of a document from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.

The document details requests for special intervention funds, including ₦50 billion from Oyo State for reconstruction after the January 2024 explosion. Fayose claims the funds were diverted, stating “Only ₦4.5bn was released to victims. The rest was channeled into Governor Makinde’s presidential ambition.” He accused Makinde of withholding information on federal interventions and misrepresenting Oyo State’s IGR.

The scandal has intensified speculation about internal PDP rifts, with Fayose alleging Makinde’s ambition fuels party tensions. The January 2024 explosion left dozens dead and hundreds displaced, sparking public outrage over compensation handling. Makinde and federal agencies have yet to respond to the allegations.
