Rabiu Kwankwaso, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, has explained his decision to support Peter Obi as the party’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, despite having his own presidential ambitions. He said the decision was informed by broader political considerations and the need to work together towards a common objective.
Speaking during an interaction with journalists at his residence in Kano, Kwankwaso urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to respect the existing North-South power rotation arrangement. He argued that although zoning is not expressly provided for in the Constitution, political understanding and fairness should guide the country’s leadership transition.
The former Kano State governor recalled contesting for the presidency on three occasions before deciding to put his ambition aside in support of Obi. He described the NDC presidential candidate as credible, adding that both share similar political goals and ideology. Kwankwaso maintained that after the proposed Southern tenure, the presidency should return to the North in the spirit of political balance and national coexistence.
