Amnesty International has called on Madonna University to reverse the expulsion and suspension of nursing students over a viral TikTok video, describing the sanction as excessive and an infringement on freedom of expression.
The global human rights organization urged the institution to immediately reinstate the affected students and respect their right to express themselves.
Amnesty International noted that students should not be punished harshly for expressing themselves on social media, and called on the University management to adopt disciplinary measures that are proportionate and in line with human rights standards.
The organization further called on the National Universities Commission (NUC) and relevant authorities to ensure that university regulations do not stifle students’ rights.
