In a remarkable reflection on wealth creation and empowerment, former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, revealed that he built about 200 shops in the Balogun section of the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex but did not retain ownership of a single one. According to Obi, the shops were deliberately handed over to young entrepreneurs and individuals he had brought from his community and other parts of the country to help them establish sustainable businesses.

Speaking on his philosophy of leadership and economic development, Obi explained that true success is not measured by the amount of property one accumulates but by the number of lives one is able to uplift. Rather than concentrating opportunities in his own hands, he chose to create pathways for others to become business owners, believing that economic empowerment remains one of the most effective tools for fighting poverty and building prosperous communities.

His revelation has sparked widespread reactions, with many Nigerians describing the gesture as a practical demonstration of mentorship, selflessness, and inclusive growth. At a time when conversations around wealth, leadership, and development continue to dominate public discourse, Obi’s account serves as a reminder that lasting impact is often found not in what one owns, but in the opportunities created for others to succeed.
