When Lawmakers Are Blamed for Projects They Do Not Control
Share this:

In Nigeria’s democratic structure, one of the most misunderstood aspects of governance is the role lawmakers play in constituency development. Sadly, many citizens are quick to blame legislators whenever projects are delayed, abandoned, or not executed, without understanding that lawmakers do not directly control project funds or implementation.

The truth remains that many lawmakers, especially those in the opposition, work tirelessly behind the scenes to attract federal presence to their constituencies. They lobby ministries, defend projects during budget considerations, engage relevant agencies, push for interventions, and fight relentlessly to ensure their communities are captured in national development plans.

However, after these projects are included in the national budget, the power to release funds and execute those projects lies completely with the executive arm of government through ministries, departments, and agencies.

This means that even when a lawmaker successfully facilitates roads, health centers, electrification projects, school rehabilitation, water schemes, and empowerment initiatives into the budget, implementation can still be stalled if the executive refuses to release funds or deliberately slows down execution.

Unfortunately, many opposition lawmakers have become victims of this harsh political reality. Despite their efforts, several projects facilitated between 2024 and 2026 suffered setbacks due to poor funding releases and administrative bottlenecks controlled by the Federal Government. Yet political opponents often exploit these delays to create the false impression that such lawmakers are inactive or unconcerned about their people.

What the public hardly sees are the countless meetings, motions, advocacy efforts, committee engagements, and negotiations lawmakers undertake daily to attract development to their constituencies. Many continue to speak for their people at the national level, defend community interests, sponsor impactful bills, and push for federal interventions even under difficult political conditions.

Democracy becomes unfair when elected representatives are denied the institutional support needed to deliver projects, only to later face criticism for circumstances beyond their constitutional authority. Nigerians must therefore begin to separate political propaganda from the realities of governance.

Before blaming lawmakers for abandoned or delayed projects, citizens should also ask critical questions about budget releases, implementation agencies, and executive accountability.

In totality, true political awareness demands understanding not just who nominated projects, but who controls the resources required to execute them.
Ultimately, many lawmakers, particularly those outside the ruling structure, remain committed to serving their people despite systemic obstacles, political suppression, and limited control over project implementation. Their efforts should be judged fairly, with a full understanding of how government truly works.
