A Nigerian citizen, Pharm. Ikeagwuonwu Chinedu Klinsmann, has formally petitioned the Government of Mexico to reconsider the proposed appointment of Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico. In the letter addressed to Mexican authorities, the petitioner expressed concerns about Omokri’s suitability for the diplomatic role, citing his past public statements and conduct which, he argues, could undermine Nigeria’s image and diplomatic relations abroad.

The petition highlights provisions under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which grants a receiving country the authority to approve or reject a proposed ambassador through the agrément process. According to the petitioner, the letter was intended to inform Mexican authorities of issues he believes are relevant to their evaluation before granting diplomatic approval. The communication was reportedly sent via DHL and addressed to Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum.

Klinsmann stated that his action was motivated by concerns about Nigeria’s international reputation and the responsibility of diplomats to represent the country with restraint and professionalism. He emphasized that the petition was not intended to interfere in Nigeria’s internal affairs but rather to ensure that the host country is fully informed before making a decision regarding the proposed diplomatic appointment.
