An Edo State High Court has ordered the remand of several youths involved in an Ekpoma protest over insecurity. The youths were sent to Ubiaja Correctional Centre for 14 days, sparking emotional scenes as relatives wailed. The protest, demanding action against kidnappings, turned violent, with reports of vandalism and looting.

The police said the initially peaceful protest was “hijacked,” leading to chaos. A protester, Osagie Abraham, 32, was shot by a military personnel and is receiving medical care. Authorities are taking disciplinary action against the personnel involved.

Edo authorities assure investigations are ongoing, urging citizens to support security agencies in tackling insecurity. Governor Monday Okpebholo reaffirmed commitment to curb kidnappings, cultism, and crimes, calling for public cooperation. Lawful protests are allowed, but must be peaceful.
