Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has dismissed long-standing speculations that he once sought a third term in office. Speaking at a Democracy Dialogue in Accra, Ghana, Obasanjo insisted he never attempted to extend his presidency beyond the constitutionally allowed two terms.

The former leader, who governed Nigeria from 1999 to 2007, emphasized that respect for democratic institutions and constitutional limits was central to his administration. He urged African leaders to uphold democratic principles and resist the temptation to cling to power.

Obasanjo’s remarks come amid renewed debates across Africa on presidential term limits, with concerns over leaders seeking constitutional amendments to prolong their stay in office.
