Australia’s Crackdown on Fake Colleges: A Threat to Invalid Diplomas
Share this:

Thousands of students, many of them international, have been left reeling after the Australian government shut down eight vocational colleges and revoked more than 25,000 diplomas issued between 2023 and 2025.

The move, spearheaded by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), revealed widespread failures in training standards and has exposed serious risks to critical sectors like aged care and mental health.

The institutions, including Arizona College and Nextgen Tech Institute, had offered training in high-demand fields that often provide pathways to immigration.

ASQA’s investigation found that none of the students who responded to verification notices could validate their qualifications.

Officials warn that the scandal endangers public safety, particularly in professions serving vulnerable populations.

Amid growing concern over visa misuse, a 2023 inquiry led by former Victoria police chief Christine Nixon uncovered criminal networks using fake enrollments to bypass immigration controls.

It’s estimated that 15% of international vocational students dropped out but remained in Australia to work.

To combat the fallout, the government has pledged AU$4.7 million in funding for deeper investigations, with 189 cases already under review across 154 institutions, many involving international students.
