The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled N-ATLAS, an open-source, multilingual and multimodal large language model tailored to Nigeria’s unique linguistic landscape.

The innovation, unveiled by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, supports Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and Nigerian-accented English. It marks a significant step toward preserving local languages in the digital era. According to Dr. Tijani, the initiative aims to boost inclusion, foster digital literacy, and create opportunities for homegrown solutions across education, governance, and business.

By introducing N-ATLAS on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Federal Government is positioning Nigeria as a continental leader in artificial intelligence, with a strong focus on local content and technological sovereignty.
