The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) “Operation Whirlwind” has once again struck a decisive blow against fuel smuggling cartels, seizing Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) valued at over ₦63 million in the Lagos-Ogun corridor.

During a press briefing held at the Customs Training College in Ikeja, Lagos, on Friday, May 30, 2025, Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) Hussein Ejibunu, the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, lauded the seizure as a significant victory in the ongoing battle against economic sabotage.

ACG Ejibunu detailed that operatives successfully intercepted 1,577 jerrycans of 25 liters each, totaling 39,425 liters of PMS, along with eight vehicles used in the smuggling operation. These seizures occurred in known smuggling hotbeds, including Ilaro, Imeko, Badagry, Owode, and Ajilete. Investigations confirmed that the illicit fuel was intended for illegal export to the Benin Republic.

The seized fuel has a duty-paid value of ₦39,425,000, while the vehicles are valued at ₦24,000,000, bringing the total value of the interdiction to ₦63,425,000.

Ejibunu commended the unwavering dedication of the officers involved, highlighting the substantial progress achieved by Operation Whirlwind within its first year.

In a move to directly benefit the public, Ejibunu announced the immediate auction of the seized fuel at a subsidized rate of ₦10,000 per jerrycan, an initiative approved by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi.

He also acknowledged the crucial support from key partners, including the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and the Office of the Attorney General.

Zonal Coordinator for Zone ‘A’, ACG Charles Orbih, further praised the sustained success of Operation Whirlwind, stating, “This landmark achievement reflects the determination and unwavering commitment of our officers to safeguarding Nigeria’s economic and national security.”
