Governor Odoh’s Surprise Move: Ban on Public Gatherings, Convoy Movements Ahead of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Visit
Share this:

Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo has announced a ban on all public gatherings and convoy movements within the state. The directive, issued on March 31, 2025, by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, cites security concerns as the primary reason for the restrictions.

However, sources suggest that the timing of this ban is strategically aligned to prevent the homecoming celebration of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a prominent political figure and perceived opposition leader in the state. Supporters of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had planned a grand reception to welcome her back, which now stands disrupted due to the imposed restrictions.

The official statement from the government indicates that intelligence reports have uncovered plans by certain individuals to stage violent rallies under the guise of political and religious agitations, potentially leading to public disorder. To mitigate such threats, the government has implemented the following measures:

A total ban on all forms of rallies and public gatherings until further notice.

Regulation of security convoys entering the state, requiring prior clearance from state commands of the deploying services.

Suspension of fishing activities in Kogi Local Government Area until peace is restored, following a crisis that resulted in the loss of two lives.

Deployment of security operatives to affected areas to restore peace and maintain law and order.

The government has urged residents to remain law-abiding and cooperative with security agencies, assuring that these measures are temporary and aimed at ensuring public safety.

Critics argue that this move is an attempt to stifle opposition and suppress political activities unfavorable to the current administration. Governor Ododo has faced criticism in recent times, with allegations of shielding his predecessor, Yahaya Bello, from prosecution over alleged financial misconduct.

Supporters of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan have expressed their disappointment, vowing to find alternative ways to celebrate her return despite the restrictions. The political atmosphere in Kogi State remains tense as residents and political observers await further developments.
