Aniekwe Calls for Real Democracy Amid Rising Insecurity
Share this:

The Honorable Member Representing Anambra East and West Federal Constituency and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Anambra East and West Federal Constituency, Hon. Peter Aniekwe (Macpee), has called for deep reflection as Nigeria marks 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, stressing that democracy must deliver tangible benefits to ordinary citizens. While acknowledging the significance of 27 years of civil rule, Aniekwe noted that many Nigerians are yet to experience the true dividends of democracy. According to him, democracy should not merely be measured by the passage of time but by its ability to improve the living conditions of the people.

He expressed concern that the gains of democratic governance are being undermined by worsening insecurity, unemployment, poor infrastructure, and inadequate public services. Aniekwe lamented that banditry, kidnapping, and violent crimes continue to threaten lives and livelihoods, forcing many farmers to abandon their farmlands. He also pointed to unreliable power supply, under-equipped healthcare facilities, unsafe roads, and challenges within the electoral system as issues that require urgent attention if democracy is to retain the confidence of the people.

The federal lawmaker commended former President Goodluck Jonathan for strengthening Nigeria’s democratic culture through the peaceful transfer of power in 2015 and praised Peter Obi for demonstrating transparent and people-oriented governance. He emphasized the need for full electoral reforms to guarantee credible elections and accountability. Aniekwe further pledged that his legislative agenda would prioritize security, youth employment, and critical infrastructure development, maintaining that democracy must go beyond promises to deliver visible and meaningful results for the people of Anambra East and West Federal Constituency.

Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria.
