Human rights lawyer, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, has emphasized that sustainable development in Nigeria depends largely on strong institutions and prioritizing citizen welfare over mere infrastructural expansion. Speaking on Thursday in Umuahia during the Abia Anniversary Lecture marking the third year of Governor Alex Otti’s administration, Odinkalu noted that governance must go beyond physical projects to focus on dignity, accountability, and the direct well-being of the people.

He criticized past governance failures in Abia State, describing nearly 24 years of leadership as a period of “ungovernment,” but acknowledged that recent reforms in the state reflect a shift toward restoring public trust and human dignity. According to him, while infrastructure such as roads, electricity, and healthcare facilities remains essential, their long-term value depends on how they impact citizens’ lives. He stressed that investments in human capital, social welfare, and institutional integrity are critical to achieving lasting development.

Governor Alex Otti, in his remarks, expressed concern over declining voter turnout in Nigeria, warning that reduced civic participation poses a serious threat to democracy. He reiterated that his administration’s reforms are centered on improving education, healthcare, and social welfare, alongside infrastructure development. The governor called for increased citizen engagement in governance, as stakeholders continue efforts to institutionalize reforms and sustain progress across the state.
