Fayose Visits Obasanjo, Heals Old Wounds Before Big 65

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, made a surprise visit to the Ota, Ogun State, residence of former President Olusegun Obasanjo , marking a significant thaw in a years-long political rift between the two influential Nigerian figures.

Speaking to Lazeera news reporters after the closed-door meeting, Fayose described the visit as “a moment of healing and new beginnings.” “I came to bury the hatchet and seek the blessings of His Excellency, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, as I turn 65,” Fayose said with a smile, flanked by aides and Obasanjo’s security detail. “We’ve had our differences, but today I’m reminded that unity is greater than pride.”

Fayose, known for his outspoken nature, admitted past tensions with Obasanjo had weighed on him. “I’ve said things in the heat of politics, but His Excellency is a statesman. He received me warmly, and I left with a lighter heart.”

Obasanjo, 87, reportedly welcomed Fayose with customary warmth, playing a round of Ayo—a traditional Yoruba board game symbolic of strategy and reconciliation. Sources close to Obasanjo’s office confirmed the former president expressed delight at Fayose’s gesture, saying, “In politics, memories are long but forgiveness is strength.”

The visit comes as Fayose prepares to mark his 65th birthday on November 10, and signals a possible shift in his political alliances ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming electoral cycles. Insiders suggest the reconciliation could pave the way for Fayose’s realignment with the ruling APC or a softer stance on national issues.

The meeting, witnessed by aides and family members, lasted over two hours and included prayers and exchanges of gifts. As Fayose departed, he told waiting cameras, “We’ve turned a page. From foes to friends.”

Fayose’s 65th birthday celebrations are expected to draw political heavyweights in Ogun and beyond, with Obasanjo’s presence now a strong possibility.
