According to a report by Daily Post, on Thursday July 9, 2026, human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has urged opposition political parties in Nigeria to work together and support former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yesufu argued that the opposition stands a better chance of challenging the ruling party if it presents a united front rather than remaining divided across different political platforms, according to her, unity among opposition groups does not require political parties to abandon their identities, structures, or principles, instead, she said cooperation and coordination among parties could help strengthen their chances in the next presidential election.
The activist noted that elections are not won simply by having the most vocal supporters, she stressed that success depends on building strong alliances and creating an effective political strategy capable of attracting support from different parts of the country.
Yesufu described Obi as a candidate with a strong political record and broad national appeal, she maintained that he should be seen as a figure capable of bringing together different opposition interests rather than being viewed as the representative of only one political camp.
She pointed to the outcome of the 2023 presidential election, where President Bola Tinubu emerged victorious with less than half of the total votes cast, according to her, the combined votes received by opposition parties showed that there is significant support outside the ruling party.
