Senator Victor Umeh has dismissed claims that the Southeast should be regarded as a minority bloc in Nigeria’s political equation, insisting that the region remains one of the country’s largest ethnic groups with strong presence across different sectors and regions. According to him, leadership should not be determined by ethnic calculations but by competence and the ability to deliver good governance.
Speaking on the future of Nigeria’s politics, Umeh argued that the country must move away from tribal sentiments and embrace merit-based leadership. He maintained that nations make progress when citizens prioritize capacity, vision and fairness over ethnic or regional interests in choosing leaders.
The lawmaker also stressed the need for equal opportunities, credible elections and inclusive governance, urging political leaders to focus on policies that unite Nigerians and address pressing challenges such as insecurity, unemployment and economic hardship.
