Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has opened up on the reason behind his decision to accept Peter Obi’s running mate position ahead of the 2023 presidential election, stating that his choice was influenced by sympathy for Obi and concern over Nigeria’s worsening condition.
Speaking during an interview with Symfoni, Datti disclosed that Peter Obi had reportedly approached other notable politicians before him, but they declined the opportunity to join the Labour Party ticket. According to him, after learning about the situation, he felt compelled to step forward, not for political gains or ambition, but out of conviction and a desire to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s future.
Datti further clarified that many people misunderstood the nature of his relationship with Obi, stressing that there was a strong sense of empathy between them. “They thought I would follow Peter Obi. Now, people don’t understand that between me and Obi, there’s a great deal of sympathy. I have sympathy for him,” he said.
