News details have emerged from Nigeria’s opposition politics as a senior figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adetokunbo Pearse, has shed light on failed attempts to reconcile internal factions within the party, particularly involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
According to a report shared by TheCable via its official Facebook page on Tuesday, Pearse disclosed that several reconciliation initiatives were initiated by concerned party stakeholders in an effort to heal divisions that have persisted since the last general election. However, he noted that these efforts did not succeed due to conditions reportedly attached to the negotiations by Wike.
Pearse explained that discussions aimed at restoring unity within the PDP repeatedly broke down, as one of the key actors allegedly maintained a firm position that made compromise difficult. He said the terms presented during the talks became a major stumbling block to any meaningful settlement.
He was quoted as saying that Wike maintained that reconciliation would only be considered under a specific political arrangement linked to the outcome of the 2023 presidential election. According to Pearse, the minister insisted that certain electoral conditions had to be met before any agreement could be reached among party leaders.
The comments have once again brought attention to the deep-seated divisions within the PDP that became more visible after the 2023 general elections, where internal disagreements and competing political interests were widely seen as factors that weakened party cohesion and strategic direction.
