Wheelbarrow Pushers Cry Out Over ‘Illegal Fees
Share this:

The massive tension mounting in Onitsha Main Market shows members of the Anambra State Wheelbarrow Owners and Pushers Association raise alarm over what they describe as persistent extortion, harassment, and intimidation by some market authorities. The crisis, centered around Okwey and Kano Streets, escalated after operators alleged they were being compelled to pay as much as ₦12,000 under the pretext of obtaining uniforms, a claim that has sparked widespread outrage among affected workers.

The controversy gained public attention following revelations made during a radio programme, where the pushers also alleged possible collaboration between certain market officials and security operatives to enforce the payments.

However, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the market, Mr. Ebere Obi, popularly known as “Tallest,” has denied the allegations, insisting that no such extortion is taking place under his leadership.

Despite the denial, the leadership of the Wheelbarrow Owners and Pushers Association, led by Mr. Ikechukwu Ezeorachalu, confirmed it has taken over the matter, expressing deep concern over the reported treatment of its members.

The union is calling on the Anambra State Government to intervene urgently, stressing that allowing the association regulate its members without interference remains key to curbing criminal activities and restoring order within the market.
