CAN Blasts Ini Edo’s Film Title, NFVCB Listens

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has asked Nollywood actress Ini Edo and her team to modify the title of her new family drama, “A Very Dirty Christmas,” following public backlash and a formal complaint from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

Released in cinemas on December 16, the film’s title sparked outrage, with CAN describing it as “offensive and a mockery” of the Christian faith. The body argued that linking the sacred season of Christmas with the word “dirty” diminishes its spiritual meaning and demanded a public apology from the producers.

NFVCB Executive Director, Dr. Shaibu Husseini, explained that the board had approved the film based on its plot and overall content, which he said did not disparage Christianity. However, he acknowledged that public perception is critical in regulation and confirmed that the board has formally engaged the producers to reconsider the title.

“We have heard the concerns raised by CAN, and we must listen. While the approval was based on creative expression, we are requesting a modification of the title to avoid interpretations that may offend Christian sensibilities or stir unnecessary religious tension,” Husseini said.

He noted that the decision aligns with Section 39(1) of the NFVCB Act, which empowers the Film Censorship Committee to withdraw or review films in the public interest.

The film, directed by Akay Mason, revolves around a family Christmas reunion that unravels into emotional conflict as long-buried secrets resurface. Its star-studded cast includes Eucharia Anunobi, Femi Branch, IK Ogbonna, Lateef Adedimeji, Nancy Isime, Josephina Otabor, and Wumi Toriola.

Husseini reassured the Christian community that the NFVCB remains committed to religious sensitivity, peaceful coexistence, and responsible creativity, stressing that Nigeria’s diversity must be respected in all artistic expressions.
