The vibrant culture and traditions of Umueri, a historic kingdom in Anambra East Local Government Area, were showcased on September 6, 2025, as His Royal Majesty Igwe Sir Ben Emeka, Oke-Ebo II, celebrated the annual Iwaji festival. The event drew people from diverse backgrounds, who gathered to witness the spectacular display of cultural heritage, including masquerades and wrestling matches. Notable dignitaries from government institutions, royalty, and technocrats attended the ceremony.

The Omabala Union, a socio-cultural organization comprising six local government areas in Anambra State, was well-represented at the event. Led by Justice P.A.C. Obidigwe (Rtd), Dr. Chike Obidigbo, Barr. Paul Okoye, and Pastor Nick Ibeh, among others, the union brought gifts, including a giant ram, to the Igwe of Umueri. This gesture underscores their commitment to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Omabala people.

The Omabala Union is set to host the Omabala Day celebration on October 11, 2025, at the Otuocha Township Stadium in Anambra East LGA. This event promises to be a grand cultural extravaganza, showcasing the unique traditions and customs of the Omabala people. The celebration aims to position Omabala as a prominent tourist destination in Anambra State, highlighting the region’s rich cultural diversity.

The Iwaji festival in Umueri is a significant event in the town’s agricultural calendar, marking the beginning of the new yam harvest. While the festival has historical roots in the community, its celebration has evolved over time. In Umueri, Iwa ji is traditionally a private affair between farmers, where yams are procured for planting and shared after harvest. The town’s cultural calendar features other notable festivals, including Alo Mmuo and Ika Mmuo, which have been integral to the community’s heritage.
