The Governorship Candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Col. Prof. Geoff Onyejegbu, has condemned the brutal assault on a female NYSC corps member, Miss Jennifer Elobor, allegedly carried out by operatives of the Anambra vigilante group, Udo-Ga-Achi.
Col. Prof. Onyejegbu said that the incident, where Miss Elobor was dragged from her residence, stripped naked, and molested, was a grave violation of human dignity and a betrayal of the NYSC’s mission of fostering national unity.
He stated that no young Nigerian who left home to serve their country should endure such humiliation, especially from a government-backed security outfit.
The NNPP candidate accused Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo of transforming Udo-Ga-Achi, originally created to combat kidnappers and fake native doctors, into a political militia.
He noted that the group was deployed during the previous Saturday’s bye-election in communities such as Oraifite and Osumenyi, where they allegedly intimidated voters and harassed opposition supporters.
Col. Prof. Onyejegbu warned that this was not an isolated case and that when corps members like Jennifer Elobor became victims of state-backed violence, it showed that governance and security in Anambra had lost direction.
He called for the immediate disbandment or retraining of the vigilante group, stressing that its current operations threatened peace, justice, and democracy.
The NNPP candidate maintained that the Soludo administration could not distance itself, since the outfit operated under its authority and political cover.
Col. Prof. Onyejegbu assured Ndi Anambra that, if elected, he would professionalize security structures, depoliticize their functions, and refocus them on genuine community protection.
