Northern Christian Leaders Rally Behind Gov. Alia

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) representing the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has declared that Benue is not alone in its grief.

The statement came during a condolence visit to Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia at the Benue State Government House, Makurdi, following recent violent attacks in the state.

Led by Rev. J.J. Hayab, the delegation of bishops, pastors, and church leaders from across denominations gathered in unity to console the governor and people of Benue.

Their visit came just days after the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, also visited to sympathize with victims and reassure the state of national concern.

Governor Alia, visibly touched by the visit, described the moment as a spiritual and emotional reassurance.

He emphasized that the presence of the Northern CAN delegation, like that of the First Lady, affirmed that Benue is not alone in this pain. The governor urged Christian leaders to remain the moral compass of the nation, stating that their role should extend beyond the pulpit to active participation in governance.

He acknowledged the challenges facing the nation but defended recent federal government reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly the removal of oil subsidies, calling it “necessary and better than a debt-driven economy.”

In his remarks, Rev. J.J. Hayab said the visit was more than symbolic. It was personal.

Rev. Hayab urged the Federal Government to act decisively against the killers, warning that continued violence in Benue — the nation’s food basket — poses a threat to Nigeria’s food security.

Also speaking, Rev. Jonathan Terwase Ugbede, Vice-Chairman of CAN in Benue, expressed appreciation to the visiting church leaders and praised Governor Alia for his integrity and commitment to good governance.

He added that the name Iormem, which means “the people have rested,” is beginning to manifest through Governor Alia’s leadership despite the challenges.

The high-powered delegation included leaders from various Christian denominations — Catholic, Baptist, ECWA, PECAN, and White Garment churches. The visit ended with fervent prayers for healing, justice, and sustainable peace in Benue and across Nigeria.
