Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Malami announced his defection on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, in a personally signed statement. He cited that his decision was not driven by anger or ambition, but by a “love for our nation and concern for the hardship our people are facing daily,” and that Nigeria is “bleeding.”

His move aligns with a new coalition of opposition forces, including prominent figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, who have adopted the ADC as their platform to challenge the ruling APC in the 2027 general elections. Malami stated his belief that through this coalition, a new course can be charted for Nigeria.
