South Sudan’s Judiciary in Peril: Deputy Chief Justice Calls for Emergency Appointments

The Deputy Chief Justice of South Sudan, Justice Laku Trankilo Nyombe, warned that the severe shortage of judges and administrative staff is disrupting the judicial system, calling for urgent appointments to address the deficit and ensure the functioning of justice.

This came during a speech delivered by Nyombe in the capital, Juba, on Wednesday, where he confirmed that the judiciary faces significant challenges due to the lack of human resources, leading to case backlogs and procedural delays.

He explained that “the last recruitment of judicial support staff was in 2010, while court assistants were last appointed in 2013,” noting that the departure of many qualified personnel has further exacerbated the crisis.

Nyombe stressed that “strengthening human resources is an urgent necessity to ensure prompt and effective justice across the country,” considering it a fundamental element for upholding the rule of law.
