The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that 25 persons have so far been rescued from Sunday’s boat accident in Kojiyo village, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The mishap occurred when a canoe carrying over 50 passengers to Goronyo Market capsized on the river.
In a statement on Monday, NEMA’s Head of Press Unit, Manzo Ezekiel, disclosed that 15 additional survivors were rescued during intensified operations, bringing the total to 25, while 25 others remain missing. Seven motorcycles were also recovered from the river, as the Goronyo Dam was temporarily closed to aid the rescue mission.
The Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, assured that search efforts would be sustained in collaboration with SEMA, NIWA, local authorities, and divers. She reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to saving lives and supporting families of the victims as operations continue.
