El-Rufai Withdraws From APC, Joins SDP Ahead Of 2027 Elections

Former Kaduna State Governor and founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has officially resigned from the ruling party, citing concerns over its current trajectory.

In a statement released today, El-Rufai announced his decision to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

El-Rufai, who played a key role in the APC’s formation and electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023, expressed disappointment in the party’s leadership, stating that it has “strayed” from its founding principles.

According to the former governor, he had made both private and public efforts to address internal issues within the APC but found them futile.

He described the party’s current state as one that has “castrated its organs and treated its membership with contempt.”

Having officially submitted his resignation letter to his APC ward in Kaduna, El-Rufai declared his commitment to the SDP as a platform for his future political engagements.

He also hinted at a broader opposition coalition aimed at challenging the APC in upcoming elections.

“I will focus on engaging with and persuading other opposition leaders and parties to join us and congregate under a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in all elections and bye-elections between now and 2027,” he said.
