The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it has identified the user account through which the voter registration information of actor and politician Emeka Ike was accessed and subsequently published online. The commission disclosed that its audit trail enabled investigators to trace the source of the unauthorized access following public concerns over the circulation of the actor’s personal voter details on social media.
According to INEC, preliminary findings indicate that the information was accessed through an authorized user account assigned for official duties during the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. The commission emphasized that registration officers are granted controlled access to specific sections of the CVR database solely for voter registration, transfer requests, and record updates, adding that such access is restricted and monitored.
INEC also dismissed claims that its database was breached by external actors, insisting that there is no evidence of outside intrusion into its systems. The commission stated that it takes the matter seriously and has commenced a thorough investigation, while the Department of State Services (DSS) has also launched a probe to determine the circumstances surrounding the unauthorized disclosure and ensure accountability.
