The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has firmly denied allegations linking him to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing as false and misleading the circulation of old social media posts suggesting partisan bias. The claims, which have gained traction online, allege that the INEC boss once expressed sympathy for the ruling party—an assertion he has dismissed as a deliberate attempt to tarnish his reputation.
Amupitan stated that the resurfaced tweets are either taken out of context or outright fabrications designed to misinform the public and undermine confidence in the electoral body. He stressed that INEC under his leadership remains committed to neutrality, transparency, and the conduct of credible elections, urging Nigerians to disregard the viral content.
The INEC Chairman further revealed that steps are already being taken to identify and prosecute those responsible for creating and circulating the misleading materials. He warned that the spread of false information poses a serious threat to democracy and assured that the law will take its course against anyone found culpable.
