Senator Godiya Akwashiki, representing Nasarawa North, has passed away at 52. The opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) lawmaker died on December 31, 2025, in an Indian hospital, where he was receiving treatment for a prolonged illness.

A family source confirmed Akwashiki’s death to the News Agency of Nigeria. A former Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Akwashiki was first elected to the Senate in 2019 and re-elected in 2023, securing two consecutive terms – a feat unmatched by any Nasarawa North senator since 1996.

Born on August 3, 1973, Akwashiki was known for his grassroots politics and constituency-focused projects. He leaves behind a wife, children, and relatives. His legacy as a dedicated leader is remembered by many in Nasarawa North.
