A self-styled marabout has been arrested in Mali for allegedly collecting €33,500 from supporters, claiming he could spiritually secure the country’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory. The arrest followed Mali’s 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Senegal, which ended their campaign. Enraged fans gathered at the marabout’s residence, prompting security operatives to intervene and take him into custody for his safety.

The suspect, identified as Mr. Sinayogo, reportedly raised over 22 million CFA francs in donations. He was taken into custody on Saturday in Bamako and is being held by the cybercrime division on allegations of fraud. Officials confirmed that practicing charlatanism is a criminal offence under Malian law.

Sinayogo, once a political activist, had rebranded himself as a marabout and made substantial financial gains. Authorities noted that taking action against him earlier would have been difficult due to the tense AFCON atmosphere. The case highlights concerns about fraud and exploitation in sports.
