Lazeera news identified: A stark imbalance in global financial trends is threatening the planet’s ecosystems, according to a new United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report, _The State of Finance for Nature 2026_. The report reveals that the world spends 30 times more on activities that harm nature than on protecting it, with governments and businesses investing trillions in industries like fossil fuels, industrial agriculture, and construction that damage ecosystems.

This imbalance is driven by massive public subsidies, particularly in fossil fuels, agriculture, and infrastructure, which reinforce harmful practices. For every dollar spent on protecting ecosystems, thirty dollars are directed towards activities that degrade nature. UNEP warns that if this trend continues, it will lead to biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse, with devastating consequences for the planet.

UNEP has introduced the Nature Transition X-Curve framework to help governments and businesses redirect capital flows and phase out harmful subsidies. Executive Director Inger Andersen emphasizes the urgency, stating, “We can either invest in nature’s destruction or power its recovery – there is no middle ground.” The report estimates that investments in nature-based solutions must grow rapidly to meet global needs by 2030, requiring a “trillion-dollar nature transition economy”.
