The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has intensified its restructuring push, announcing plans to hold state congresses and eventually a national convention to elect new party officials. The faction’s BOT chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, revealed the move during a meeting at Wike’s residence in Abuja, stressing that groundwork for reorganising troubled state chapters was already underway.
Ohuabunwa stated that credible caretaker committees were being constituted to rebuild trust and strengthen internal structures ahead of the congresses. He pledged the BOT’s full backing for the factional NWC led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, saying the group was committed to upholding party rules and ensuring fairness across all processes. According to him, the BOT must serve as the stabilising moral force of the PDP at this crucial period.
The crisis escalates the internal division that saw a rival bloc aligned with Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde conduct its own convention in Ibadan, producing Turaki Taminu as national chairman amid conflicting court orders. The Wike camp is now in court seeking to nullify that convention. Ohuabunwa urged party elders to support ongoing reforms and maintain unity as the PDP prepares for future political battles.
