Share this:

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has said that his administration is overhauling facilities at National Youth Service Corps Permanent Orientation Camp, Awgu, in order to provide a more conducive environment for training of Corps Members deployed to the State.

Mbah disclosed that the Agwu camp was the first Permanent Orientation facility in Nigeria, having been in existence since the inception of the Scheme in 1973.

The Governor made this disclosure when he hosted the Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, at the Government House, Enugu, the State Capital.

He said that he had taken cognisance of NYSC’s enormous contributions to the socio-economic development of the State, and Nigeria, in addition to its age-long achievements in promoting national unity and integration, and had included the Scheme into his overall development agenda from the inception of his administration, adding that the reconstruction of Agwu camp was part of the agenda.

He reiterated that as the first in the country, overhauling and upgrading facilities at the Awgu camp is a project that was dear to his heart, describing the camp as a monument an pride to Enugu State.

Governor Mbah expressed gratitude to the Federal Road Safety Corps for its magnanimity in releasing its Training School at Udi, temporarily for orientation camping activities by the NYSC in the State.

Mbah assured his guest that his administration would continue to work closely with all security agencies in ensuring the security and safety of Corps Members in the State.

On his part, the Director-General expressed appreciation to the government and people of Enugu for their hospitality towards Corps Members, a gesture that he said had motivated some Corps Members to stay back at the end of their service year.

The NYSC Boss commended the Governor for the upward review of the monthly stipend for Corps Members by the State Government to N20,000.00.

General Nafiu applauded the State for being a good host to NYSC South-East Area Office 1, as well as providing essential facilities for the smooth operations of the sub-regional office.

He assured the Governor of NYSC’s continuous partnership towards actualizing the vision and mission of his administration in addressing the developmental challenges of the State.

Nafiu said the NYSC is not parasitic as Corps Members were properly prepared for positive impact, which was made manifest in their contributions to rural healthcare delivery, educational development, Infrastructural intervention and integrated community development efforts, in addition to their routine services in the public and private sectors of the economy, among others.

He assured his host that the Scheme would continue to deploy qualified skilled manpower to the State to support the efforts of Government in the quest to better the fortunes of the people.
