Malawi is trailing behind its regional peers on internet access, with penetration currently at 36.9 percent—well below the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) average of 44 percent.
The revelation means that with Sadc countries targeting 60 percent internet reach by 2029, Malawi needs to act fast to close the digital divide.
Speaking during a workshop on professional conduct in online broadcasting in Lilongwe, Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) director general Daud Suleman called for deliberate efforts to improve access to smart devices, reliable electricity, internet connectivity and digital literacy.
He also urged broadcasters to fully embrace the digital era by enriching their content and engaging audiences more meaningfully online.
