Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
President Bio takes over from Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who led the regional bloc for the past two years.
The leadership transition took place at the 67th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
President Tinubu formally handed over the reins to Bio, marking a new chapter in the bloc’s leadership at a time of mounting political and security challenges across the region.
